SHAH ALAM, 5 March – The Ministry of Education should place sensitivity and
concern for rural schools in implementing the much-debated Dual Language
Programme (DLP), according to Professor Emeritus Dr Shaharir Mohammad.
He also mentioned that the Ministry only carried out
experiments on DLP to selected schools, such as cluster schools. Rural schools,
however, were excluded from the test as the Ministry is hesitant by inadequacy
outcomes.
“Promising pupils are adept at learning English language but
why only limits to selected schools? Are those in rural areas have no
capabilities to learn the language at par or better from their urban
counterparts? The Ministry should start going deeper to ensure this programme a
success, if not they would be lacking behind and only know Bahasa Malaysia,” he
commented during the National Education Direction Seminar Series 2 at Dewan
Pro-Canselor, Universiti Selangor.
“The stability of the programme depends on analysis and
equilibrium. If a part of schoolchildren is not even under the focus, then the
programme is defeating its purpose to ensure all pupils are adept at learning
English language for their future’s sake,” he added.
